As part of the Heilig-Kreuz project, network dimensioning and cost estimation were carried out for two new or replacement sections of a heating network. The basis of the work is the detailed representation of the existing and planned network in the heatbeat Digital Twin, which is used to calculate and document all technical and economic parameters consistently. In total, approximately 3,780 kW of connected load over a network length of approximately 1,786 m were taken into account. For precise demand assessment, building-specific consumption data from gas bills are used, while a demand estimate is made for buildings without measured values.
For the hydraulic and thermal design of the network, the supply and return temperatures, pressure conditions, volume flows, flow velocities, and hydraulic utilization were calculated for each pipe section in the Digital Twin. On this basis, the pipe dimensions were determined and the type and brand of the pipelines were selected and compared. All results were recorded and visualized in a georeferenced manner, ensuring complete traceability of the network design.
The network planning includes the detailed route planning of both branches in the heatbeat Digital Twin as well as the complete hydraulic dimensioning. The design is carried out section by section and takes into account typical fittings such as T-joints, house connections, and reducers.
For the civil engineering works, a route-specific cost estimate was prepared on the basis of the surface types stored in the Digital Twin. The earthworks were taken into account depending on the trench profile.
The results are compiled in a detailed network dimensioning report and documented with supplementary materials (an Excel table with all network and node parameters as well as georeferenced drawings). This provides a fully dimensioned (partial) network including a reliable cost estimate.
The work package provides the client with a sound technical and economic basis for decision-making on the expansion of the network. The network stored in the Digital Twin and the section-by-section cost estimate can be used directly for further planning, the bidding process, and communication with stakeholders (e.g. connection customers, civil engineering contractors, funding agencies).
